About Kappa Alpha Theta Kappa Alpha Theta was founded in 1870 as the first Greek-letter fraternity for women. We value our history and take pride
in our four founders, who were truly visionary. We also value what we offer today's women! Our vision statement- Kappa
Alpha Theta is the organization that provides the finest and most rewarding membership experience- is based on our core purpose
and values. Our purpose is to support members to learn, grow, and excel, and our core values are personal excellence, friendship/sisterhood,
scholarship, service, and leadership.
The Beginnings of Psi Chapter In 1889 seven girls
dragged their mattresses into a room, turned out the lights, and talking and singing, determined to organize themselves into
a club. All of these women had been asked to join one of three fraternities on campus at one time or another, but had refused
for various reasons. Their goal became to gain a charter from a national fraternity, provided it was one better than any yet
at Wisconsin. One of the girls had heard a Cornell alumna, belonging to one of the fraternities already represented at Wisconsin,
say there was only ONE fraternity better than hers: KAPPA ALPHA THETA. With this as inspiration, the club determined to apply
to Kappa Alpha Theta for a charter. They wrote to the nearest chapter, Tau at Northwestern University, stating their ambitions.
In a short time, girls from Tau came to look over the hopeful Thetas. "Imagine our excitement. The Tau girls were royally
entertained of course and went away very enthusiastic over our future, and rushed things with such energy that it was not
long before a charter of Kappa Alpha Theta was granted. Seven girls from Tau came up and before we realized it, we were initiated.
Many of you can remember the mingled sensations of pride and bewilderment which attend the days after initiation. Before we
were up the next morning, flowers arrived, followed by more flowers and notes of congratulations, while in the evening a party
was given for us." So on May 29, 1890, Psi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Theta was born. Click on Crest to go to the National Theta Website or the House to take a Look at Our Home!
